the community came together for the annual girls basketball competition, started by a partnership between a local businessman and peace corps. The competition continued as an annual event and was in its 5th year last year. The businessman that funded the competition (uniforms for the girls, basketballs, refs etc) was forced to flee Gao with threat of his life in April this year, by the MNLA, who subsequently gutted his business. MUJAO currently are occupying his place of business. Moreover, in light of Sharia restrictions imposed by MUJAO, girls will no longer be able to play basketball.
